About Me

I was born in the small island of Praia, Cabo Verde off the west coast of Africa, and as a little girl, I remember always being enamored by how people lived their lives. I would sneak off alone to find new places to explore in Praia and I enjoyed the fresh smell of coffee, cachupa and taking polaroid pics, not to mention dancing in our small living room! As I got older after moving to the United States, I realized my passion would be defined as a documentarian - someone who is able to capture life's beautiful moments and enjoy it all the while. I used to produce these small video documentaries in high school that made my parents and my Aunt Toni say - "girl, you should be making films!" Flattered and also confused about how I wanted to use my skills, I embarked on a journey to Oberlin College where I learned who I really am and what I wanted to do in life. In my early twenties, I discovered my passion for blogging, which combined all my loves: photography, film, writing, editing photos, exploring new things, styling, documenting and now, social media. After graduating from college, I worked for a live TV show at NBC Chicago (where I was an Emma Bowen Scholar). Shortly before the show ended, my boyfriend and I (who is now my fiancee) moved to NYC. I landed my first job at Everyday Health in Brooklyn as a Sales Assistant but I also started blogging and being a part of the Editorial Team. I was inspired to start my blog at 24 - hence the title 24 Blogazine. I wrote about beauty, fashion, health and news relating to women in their twenties. I eventually landed an amazing opportunity at Disney ABC Television Group, where I was more involved in the day to day life of an Account Executive, attending meetings with clients and working to streamline the sales processes of all the Disney XD, ABC Kids and Disney Channels. Almost a year after starting my job at Disney, I became unwell and discovered I suffer from a hormonal disorder called PCOS (Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome). It was pretty scary, especially as a twenty-something, and I was living in a big city just starting my career. I took some time off to figure out how to get better and I became more passionate about my blog in the meantime. Three years later, my health is great and I feel better than ever. Coming across sites like PCOS Diva, Joyoushealth.ca and Golden Shoes helped me discover what my mind, body and soul needed. This is when I came up with my other name "Flower Girl" because flowers are fragile, seasonal plants that need a lot of nurturing and if a flower doesn't get all that it needs, it will wither away and die. This is how I see my life as an older twenty-something with a health condition - I have to constantly monitor my lifestyle. It has empowered and helped me realize my true purpose in life - to share my story, and to document other flower girls (who've encountered obstacles in life and have overcome them with grace and true inner beauty). I hope my blog inspires and helps you realize your true potential in life. I live with my fiancee and cat Lilly in our South Loop Chicago apartment.
