weekend in photos - chitown iphone edition

It's freezing in Chicago and it's not even February yet! I've been braving the cold by wearing extra layers, a wool coat with a ridiculously big hoodie, all the while attending events and mingling with friends. I had a blast at my friend Libby's bday party at Nellcote, enjoyed some delicious food at MingHin Cuisine in Chinatown, listened to Lorde, got a painless cartilage piercing at Insight Studios and had fun talking about old family photos and life with friends. I've been learning how to take the subway (the L for those of you who can't stand that term) and trying to give more to my community while job searching. I caught a cold on Saturday but hoping I get better for Thanksgiving. My friend recommended zinc lozenges which have been quite soothing to my throat. Check out my iPhone shots, and I'll be posting how to take professional photos on the iPhone this week! Trust me, great shots can be captured on any device. I hope you all had a wonderful weekend, staying warm. xx

3 easy ways to give back to your community right now!

source: sap.info

Let's face it - we're all super busy with our day to day lives, but somehow we always find time to do what we enjoy. But what if I told you that you can add an additional activity to your schedule that wouldn't require too much of your time, and will allow you to enrich your life as well? This activity is giving back to your community - a very important thing we all should do more of because it's healthy for us, will not only make us feel good but also empower others, and it will pay off for some of us job hunters. Here are the 3 easy ways I have found to give back to my community and hopefully they will give you some ideas:

Fun times with these incredible creative ladies at the She Says Chi networking event

1. Attend events that promote social activism and advocate for a good cause while you network. While promoting my new blog, I've been attending a bunch of events in Chicago. Some are just networking for bloggers and tech people, but there are a ton of events for those of us interested in giving back. This past week, I attended an event hosted by She Says Chicago (an organization that combines networking for creative professional women with giving back to a good cause), where we donated art supplies to underprivileged teens. How did I find out about this event? I have the Eventbrite app on my phone and every Sunday I check what events are happening in my city, playing close attention to organizations that are doing good in our communities. I also scope out twitter and Facebook posts, and trust me, people are always posting events like this. Attending an event is an easy way to contribute because it won't take that much time in your schedule, while you're connecting with other folks and working on your job hunt or promoting your business. This article explains 7 reasons volunteering can lead to a job and this one is all about how it will improve your resume!

2. Use your interests to contribute to good causes. I'm very passionate about documenting people, so I always offer up my services to take photos of organizations doing good for the world. On Wednesday, I shadowed my friend Pete Kalenik, who is the Chief of Staff at Leave No Vet Behind, a non-profit organization employing veterans to keep kids safe in tough Chicago neighborhoods. For an entire day, I met and documented the phenomenal veterans in blue caps standing around schools, keeping watch over Chicago's youth. We then proceeded to the organizations' Greencorps program, where the teens in South Shore were harvesting and working on building solar panels and a green house. The teens were really happy to be photographed and expressed their excitement in being a part of this program, which is keeping them off the streets. Using my photo-documenting skills allowed me to contribute to these two causes, and I was extremely thrilled to be involved. According to this article, several studies show how giving back improves your health by stimulating the release of endorphins, which has been linked to improved nervous and immune system functions, not to mention improvement in one's self-esteem.

3. Little things count too - contribute, travel, donate & offer your services to food drives, a mentoring program, or your city's community service programs. I was reading an interesting article a couple of weeks ago about what nine world leaders were doing in their 20's, and I loved how Barack Obama helped rebuild his local community on the south side, volunteered at his church and then went back home to visit his relatives in Kenya. All of these things helped build his people skills, and I'm sure influenced his political decision to pursue the presidency. In Oberlin College, as part of my participation in the Bonner Scholars Program, I volunteered to go back home and take photos of the poverty in Cabo Verde. I documented the lives of families and children, then came back to my school and did a fashion show/ fundraiser benefitting the people back home. It was a fun adventure that allowed me to reconnect with my roots while simultaneously giving back. If you don't have the chance to travel, you can donate to a food drive. Do you live in a high rise building? Every holiday season I'm sure you've seen the collaborations between toys for tots or a similar toy drive organization you can contribute to as well. If you'd like to mentor a young teen or child, Mentoring.org has a list of organizations based on where you live. I also like Chicagocares.org where you can volunteer doing anything you'd like.

As you can see, the options are endless and giving back is a seamless activity that doesn't have to involve offering up too much of your time. In fact, it can be fun, healthy and amazing for your career. It's just the little things that add up to a big thing because you can impact someone else's life in a huge way!

love yourself - from the inside, out!

Over the years I've become infatuated with people's perception of beauty, especially us women because we tend to be overly critical of ourselves and super competitive with one another.

mean girls - you cheated on me

This infatuation probably came about when I was experiencing the toughest part of PCOS - changes in my physical appearance. I began to question whether I was beautiful or not, and then I had to remind myself that this was only temporary, and that once I got my hormones back on track, things would be ok. This is exactly how it ended up playing out and now I don't worry so much, but what about women who haven't had any physical changes to their appearance? They just have this perception that they aren't beautiful no matter what makeup or clothes they put on. I feel this is a curse that we need to break because it not only affects our interaction with one another, but also how we find and keep love.

Think about the women in Hollywood who've altered their faces to look more defined and perfect! I'm sure names like Lindsay Lohan, Heidi Montag and Megan Fox are running through your mind. Heidi (for example) notes - "there is a lot of pressure there and of course we all want to feel attractive, wanted and beautiful". The average person isn't in Hollywood but we sure act like there's some sort of beauty pageant going on in real life because the way we interact with each other can be so catty and unacceptable.

Heidi is right - we all want to be beautiful, and that's why when we encounter someone we think is gorgeous, it threatens our perception of who we are. This New York Times article explains it all - some of you may agree with it and others may not.

I believe the solution to all of this is finding inner peace within ourselves and only then will we find our own true beauty, which will radiate out. If we take full care of our bodies - exercising, eating well, and finding beauty products that care for our skin types - our beauty will come out. I love Liv Tyler's article where she reveals her secrets on how she cares for her inner and outer beauty.

Ladies, are you with me? We have to respect ourselves and care for our beauty in order to reap the full benefits of true beauty.

I believe my true beauty evolved after I started taking care of my hormonal disorder. Once I figured out the right medications, eating habits and self-care, I feel that I became more at peace with myself and my beauty became more natural and easy to achieve. Now as far as us competing with one another - that is something I don't have a solution for, but it starts with a conversation and that's what I'm opening the door for in this post. Any ideas? Please tweet, share or comment. xx

thankful for my lilly - why cat adoption is important!

Our lives and hearts haven't been the same since Lilly stepped in. My fiancee and I adopted our four-year old medium-haired Maine Coon-looking cat this past March. She's everything we could've wanted in a pet and more. We consider her our child, even though we realize parenting will be an even bigger commitment. You know the saying, you will never know what it's like to be a mom until you have a child? Well, I believe you will never understand the love you feel of owning and loving a pet until you adopt one.

thanksgiving prep - healthy mac & cheese for the entire family!

Hey guys. Happy Weekend! My mom and I were discussing our Thanksgiving menu, and since she plans a huge menu of deliciousness every year, I was surprised to hear she wasn't making mac & cheese! My sister was flabbergasted also, so I decided to step in as the big sis and save the day. Now that it has been decided that I'm in charge of making the mac & cheese, I had to come up with a healthy alternative since I don't do milk and I want to eat healthy during the holiday season. Thank God for google because as I was researching recipes online, I came across this yummy looking mac & cheese lite recipe via fitness magazine. The title immediately captured my attention - Lighten Up: A Healthy Mac & Cheese RecipeI want everyone to enjoy my low carb, low calorie recipe and shhh, hopefully no one will notice the difference between this and an unhealthy version of the comfort food. Here's a step by step process of what I did - mostly following the recipe but with changes here and there (using my own cooking expertise). Enjoy!

4 styles you'll want to rock for the holidays

I'm really into style - I see what's trending, and then try to incorporate that into my wardrobe. While it's tempting to buy everything, I look at what is feasible for my budget and ask myself, "what do I already have hanging in my closet?" From there I buy one or just a few pieces - nothing more! It's a hard thing to do but just think of it as you being true to yourself, your budget and your style, because after all, you don't want to be a copy cat. I've been digging a few looks this season and I think you'll get a ton of inspiration from these mashups and street styles.

Gold is back with a vengeance. Gold is a color every girl loves and has in her wardrobe, whether it's a gold purse, shoes or skirt. Gold dresses and skirts are also really versatile, in that you can wear sneaks or glam it up with pumps, sandals and unique satchels. I think this will be a huge trend for Thanksgiving dinners and holiday parties. If you're wanting to get a few gold pieces, like Milla's for example (who's wearing head to toe Isabel Marant x H&M) it'll be in stores worldwide tomorrow! Deets here and here.

It's not all about the parties and dinners right? I mean, you'll want to cozy up on the weekends near the fireplace and enjoy hot coco with your boo, so big, warm sweaters are definitely more appropriate. H&M is always my go to for cozy sweaters at reasonable prices, and believe it or not - thrift stores too! Google thrift stores in your area and scope them out when you're free.

Impress yourself and your co-workers by dressing professionally at work with an edge. These styles provide really awesome inspiration to push the envelope just a tad while still conforming to the workplace standards. J Crew, Uniqlo, H&M and local boutiques are all amazing places to shop for work clothes without compromising your unique sense of style. Tall and over the knee boots are a great way to bridge that gap because they can be sexy but toned down too.

weekend in photos - laguna beach, ca

Hello friends! A couple of weeks ago, I took a break from my job hunt woes and cold Chicago for a mini vaca in Laguna Beach, California. It was everything I hoped and more. I celebrated my fiancee's mother's birthday, who is such a lovely woman, and we always have a great time together. We did a ton of hiking, some yoga, a little shopping in town and my favorite part of the trip was walking along the beach - soaking in the bright sun with the fresh, clean smell of California. I was in love! My trip was short but I took a day to visit LA, where my uncle lives, and I reunited with my college girlfriend. Life is just perfect sometimes, ya know? When was the last time you took a little vacation?
